One of the best lessons learned from the pandemic? You don’t need to spend tons of money or invest in fancy gym equipment to get a good workout. Exercises that require minimal to no equipment can build strength and conditioning just as effectively as equipment that you might use at a gym.
Beyond that, it’s always nice to change up your workout routine to keep things fresh and effective. Incorporating resistance bands into your routine is one easy way to mix it up. They’re portable, so you can take them anywhere, but also perfect for home workouts when you are limited on space. Let’s check out a few ways resistance bands can help you get stronger while adding variety to your strength training routine!
Benefits of Adding Resistance Bands to Your Workout
Train your muscles in a different way with resistance bands. Here are some reasons why you might consider integrating this type of training into your routine
Progressive Resistance
Unlike dumbbells or other free weights, resistance bands provide progressive resistance throughout each movement. As you stretch the resistance band with each exercise, your muscles have to work against greater resistance as more tension is gradually placed on the band. This creates a more intense concentric contraction (as your muscle shortens) for whatever muscle group you are working on.
This isn’t any better or any worse than using free weights, but importantly, it is different. The key to continual progression and avoiding plateaus in fitness is to challenge your body with different types of stimuli so your muscles can adapt and grow stronger.
Customize It
Fitness is personal, and your equipment should be, too! Not only can you switch out your bands for various levels of resistance, but you can also increase or lessen resistance by changing band placement. The resistance bands allow for micro-adjustments in resistance by simply changing hand or foot placement, depending on the exercise. Rather than completely changing the amount of weight you are using, these micro-adjustments allow you to pick an intensity that perfectly suits your fitness level and workout.
Versatility
One of the best characteristics of resistance bands is that they are versatile. You can use them on their own or with other strength equipment, such as barbells, to maximize your workout efficiency.
If you’re in need of a recovery day, the bands can be used for stretching assistance to get deeper into your stretch, but safely.
